Default Aqueous

It has been pouring with rain today so thought I would try something quite out of the ordinary for me. I have seen something like this done before so thought I would give it a try. I filled a beer glass full of water and stood it on a work bench. Fixed a 500w security type lamp behind a white, plastic, diffuser board (bread cutting board actually) and set my camera up on a tripod with a 100mm macro lens about 150mm from the beer glass. Tried dropping milk into the water. This diffused far to quickly. Tried various colour oil based paints. Daft!! I should have know they would form globules and sink to the bottom of the glass. In the end I tried these two food colouring dyes. The trick is to establish a focus point. It would probably be easier in a smaller diameter glass as the dyes do seem to want to disperse after a while. I worked at f16 and found shutter to be 1/125s at 100 ISO. The wife's away so worked in the kitchen. Knocked the glass over and spilt food dye on the floor. After 4 odd hours I think I had had enough!!
I expect to get all sorts of comments - no probs. If anyone has done this and has some tips I would be very grateful. Will give it a try again.

Thanks guys for your comments. I do think I can get much better results with more time and effort. I will certainly try again soon.

After reading this the other day, I tried this under similar circumstances - didnt have the white background though, just a window - will get one next time. I found that I had to keep changing glasses as the thickness of the glass and distort the image, I ended up using (my mothers) very fine/thin glass vase, luckily she wasn't home either. I didn't results like the quality of yours but I am going to keep trying, this is a very fun technique!

Neat abstract. The right flow and color can make a nice wall painting

Oh man, that's fun! So creative too, using a shop light and a cutting board. Love your thinking! This is great, I can see how it'd be tricky to get a point of focus. Great colors, great experimenting!
