I shot this weekend in JPEG. I haven't made the dive into shooting raw yet. I'll probably start soon.

I hate to disagree here, but that last bit is wrong.

If you were shooting with your 80-400 VR, then the lens is the issue not the VR. That lens is SLLLOOOWWW to focus. Also, were you using continuous servo mode? That would solve your refocusing issues.

I use my VR on all the time panning and it works fantastic.

Yeah, I agree to a degree. I was thinking about it after I responded and thought that it wasn't so much the VR as it was the focus speed. I tried a few with single focus and some with continuous, with mixed results in each mode. However, I think most of my issues were caused by using single point focus vs full field focus. I used full field on Sunday and had much better results. I'm going to be shooting some more action next weekend and will give VR another try with different combos of focus mode and see how it goes. I'm still trying to get my feet wet with fast action.... Baby steps....

Get yourself a fast focusing lens and you'll wonder how the hell you ever lived without it

Can't beat the 80-400 though for range! I love it! I've got a Nikkor 400 2.8 in my shopping cart...just waiting for a couple deals to close before I hit "Buy It Now..."

Thanks!

Jim
