The wildlife rehabilitation centre I volunteer with had a loon that was ready for release back into the wild. Before they can be let go we needed to be sure it was water proof, ensuring thermo-regulation and buoyancy, and that it could successfully catch prey. To do this we use a 1000 gallon tank, supply live fish and observe. The loon was very fluid in moving through the water. I wanted to get a picture of it below the surface but did not have a waterproof housing for the camera.
To get this shot I lowered an empty fish tank into the water, keeping it just above the water line. I lowered the camera into the tank and shot blind hoping for a lucky shot. It turned out better than I had hoped. Camera Canon Rebel Xti digital 18-5mm lens Auto mode and Luck
