Cool A shot of the thames

Hey guys,

I was out just taking some pictures in London of the river thames, and I took this shot:

IMG_1578

Yep, rather plain so i tried to save it, and here was the result:

Shot of the thames

If you look at the boat in the orginal image, it has some sort of of pole/sign in the middle of it, so i photoshopped that out

The orginal image exif details:

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/8.0
Focal Length: 50 mm
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

* Where Was it Taken?
South Bank, Central London, UK

* What settings did you use?
Aperture Priority Mode

* What gear (camera, lens etc) did you use?
Canon 40D, 50mm 1.8 II

* Why did you compose the shot as you did?
I originally it would be a nice capture as i could get the bridge, the boat and the side of the jetty all in one shot

* What post production work have you done on the shot (if any)?

The image was changed to black & white in Lightroom, cropped and tones were adjusted to give the image more contrast

* What were you hoping to achieve with the shot?
Actually no idea

* What did you do well?
I reckon the composition of the final image pulled off, just the right amount of tone, not too washed out, not too dark

* How could you have improved it?
Erm possibly a better crop?

Default Bridge

I think you're first impression was accurate. The Color on the first image is a little plain. But I kind of like the bridge. I dunno if you looked at it in black and white before cropping it out. Maybe work with finding a different amount of cropping. I like how the boat looks isolated and alone. Very interesting capture. Thanks for sharing.

Could you include some more specific information on how you made the image?

Nice recovery! I like the second shot. I'm also wondering how it would look with the crop to the top of the bridge in the background, but that may make the shot too busy again. I like it how it is, just trying to visualize it.

Great job! I find myself doing this on occassion and sometimes (as many probably have) I almost delete a shot but then try a crop to see what I get. That crop occassinally turns into the best of the set!

Anyway, thanks for sharing.
