Thanks,FC. I was LOST myself, but also a little embarrassed to ask such questions to folks who are obviously head and shoulders above my meager photographic skills. Arlon's reply to your questions has maybe put me on the right track.

At 100 ISO, try 125th @ f/11. then bracket 1/3 EV steps either side You can see how you go with a 2x teleconverter on your long lens which will bring your aperture to somewhere near this. You need the effect of sidelighting to give you some shadows by shooting before or after full moon

Here's a clever little astro exposure calculator for Windows:
Cetus AstroExp It even distinguishes different exposures for different phases of the moon. |

Be sure to READ ALL of the first post. Only the first shot in the post is hand held. Others on the first post are LONG lenses, heavy tripod and shot with the timer. Lens I used on the first hand held shot was an 18-250mm image stabilized Sigma lens. I shoot left eyed and rest the camera on my left shoulder when I need as steady of a shot as I can get hand held. Google "Joe McNally da grip" or see it on this youtube video: HERE
"Da grip" works quite well if you can shoot left eyed.. Easy for me because I shoot that way all the time.. Lst picture in this galllery HERE shows me shooting the moon with the big lens and big tripod. Lower shots in the original post where shot this way. |

![]() Camera: Canon EOS 30D Exposure: 0.3 Aperture: f/13.0 Focal Length: 300 mm Sigma DG 70-300 lens I've been trying forever to get a good moon shot, manual focus/auto focus, etc etc & have had some okay shots...never anything super clear "pop" out at you. The above photo I was very very happy with...but I'll keep on trying! photoshop 2 of my own images: ![]() thanks much for this post.... I'll be certain to shoot with a lower ISO! |
