Default Splash of Color

Splash of Color

Canon Xsi
f8
3.2s
Flash fired from the right (Canon 580exII on 1/16th power)
White reflector on the left.

This was shot with a 70mm Macro lens about 8 or so inches from the splash. The splash is milk and a drop of red and blue food coloring. Reflection is from black plexiglass.

For the color:
1. Place a drop of milk on the black plexiglass.
2. Put a drop of red food coloring on the left side of the milk drop (in the milk drop, not beside it)
3. Put a drop of blue food coloring on the right side of the milk drop.

Timing with this is complicated, so I use and infrared trigger to sense the drop and fire the flash. Learn more about IR triggers at www.hiviz.com.

And of course, the setup (click the picture to see the notes on my flickr site):
"Splash of Color" setup

This is one of the nicest water drops I've seen to date. Many thanks too for the method. Excellent work. Keep it up.

Holy cow. That is rediculous. Didn't know you could get such colors. Great work.

Default Colors & Cream

Took another stab it again this weekend. I wasn't pleased with my first set, as I thought they were a bit soft (despite getting #2 on Explore).

Colorful Crown

Red, White, & Blue

I mixed in a bit of cream with the skim milk, making it a bit thicker. I also increase the f-stop from f8 to f19 and backed the camera up another 6 inches, giving about 5 times greater DOF. Last of all, I added a second flash where the "ghetto reflector" was.

Who would think that drop of milk and few colors would produce such a great and simple picture.
