I'm new to photography, and love this effect. I was wondering how you prevented the picture from being over exposed due to the slow shutter speed. Thanks.

hey ishyid, first of all, thanks. secondly, i didn't make any conscious effort to control the exposure, so maybe i was lucky in a way. however, my base and background were made of black items (mounting board and a random black laptop bag, haha!) so i think that helped. also, as stated, the exposure bias was set to -1. post processing helps a bit. i brought out some highlights and also made the picture darker as well as adding the sepia effect (helps!)
i hope you find this info helpful.

also, to peeperita, thanks

Default lighting?

what type of lighting did you use? i know the flash was off.. any studio lighting used or just regular lights with the white balance setting changed? i'm still trying to figure out what type of lights to get...

hey jdconner, i used natural window light, diffused by a white curtain (a bit sheer). no other lights and WB was set on auto. it took several (more like dozens) of attempts to get it right so yeah. hope this helps!

the trick I believe is to actually stop at the increments just like you said....I have seen long exposure zoom where it is constant rotation of barrel while shutter is open. This is much better. A most excellent photo here!

Beautiful shot! I saw it and instantly thought it looked like a special effect you'd see in a film involving time travel. I can't wait to give this one a try. Thanks so much for sharing!
