Just one question - says the ignorant one, but would rubbing alcohol work for this - or do you need ethyl alcohol? Thanks

I used 98% rubbing alcohol from Walgreens. Worked great.

Ha! the aftershave bottle gave me an idea we use to do in high school...take an Axe bottle and a flame in front of it...gives a very cool flamethrower effect.

Very nice pictures and effect!

looks cool... The mad scientist in my would probably rig up a nice electronic ignitor so I could be a few feet away... and wouldnt have to worry about having a flame in the shot. Since its dark, and the wires could be routed behind the bottle, you'd never see them in the shot.

Mike1187,
I agree. I think one of the old "Estes" electronic (6-volt) model rocket engine igniters would be perfect for this. You can make the wires as long as you want, giving you a better safety zone from the burning gasses. If someone give this a try, please let us know how it works.

Thank you eduafe (and everyone else who contributed to this thread)! Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but I really enjoyed making this shot. It's not nearly as risky as it sounds. I only used about two cap-fulls of isopropyl alcohol to get this shot. The flame lasted about two seconds. The bottle was only very slightly warm to the touch immediately afterwards. The most dangerous part is emptying the bottle initially! ;-) (Just kidding - I went to a local bar and asked for an empty - they were happy to oblige).
