Post Skateboard Motion

The Speed of Light

Setup

First attach the wood onto the bottom part of the skateboard with clamps. Next place counterweights on opposite side of camera's location. Then you'll want to position your camera so that the nose of the skateboard and part of the shoe are shown. Be sure to include the wheel in your shot but be careful to keep the wood out. Prepare the camera by setting exposure and focus ahead of time. I used a 20 second exposure for mine.

Shooting

I turned my camera on timer to reduce shaking. Once it starts taking the picture roll the skateboard gently back and forth over at least 15 feet. Continue going back and forth until the picture is done. Try experimenting with different backgrounds, exposures and camera angles until you like your result.

An excellent illustration of how you took it. I have one question - in the actual shot, were you actually skateboarding or just using the positioned shoe as shown?

Really cool effect! Thanks for showing us how you did it! I love it.

And Wulf, I think he just put the shoe on there, not actually riding it...

I think that would be safer for the camera. Looking at the set up, I think you could ride on the board but there would be too much chance of mashing the camera for me to want to risk it!

What a brilliant shot and an excellent tutorial. I have just one thought - would it look even more natural if you had put some slight movement on the wheels?

Unless i am misunderstanding you, the wheels do have radial movement in the picture, you cant see the words and logos on them.
