I mean again, I'm not a total idiot, I made sure it was on there pretty tight. Honestly, keeping it there safely wasn't the hard part. It was pretty firmly pinched into the spot where the mirror meets the door. The tricky part was making it sturdy enough that it wouldn't bounce around at all, because with a long exposure you'd notice if the car wasn't sharp. I also had the neck strap wrapped around the mirror once as a last resort.

Now, how many of you would trust an $8 Made-in-China knockoff?

I'm thinking this would go nicely on the front hood, with the camera strap wrapped around the windshield wipers, and an affordable polarizing filter. Or on the back bumper, with the strap caught in the trunk lid.

As with most rig shots, you don't need to drive long, nor fast, as the motion blur will show up regardless.

I'm actually looking at suction mounts now to do more stuff like this. But no, I wouldn't trust that one. I don't think a single 8" flexible leg would do well just floating there. Not with an SLR at least. Suction mounts should be short and rigid.

A very valid point. Are there any affordable ones out there? I'm dying to photograph this GTi.

This one seems about as low as you can go, though it's out of stock at the moment.

Obviously this is one of those things that you shouldn't skimp on. This one might be fine, I don't know. But when your camera's very life is at stake, the margin for error is zero.

Pretty cool shot. Any post processing done to play with the colors? As far as the flash goes, I like it. The direct flash may not look natural but I think the harsh shadows match the feeling of the rest of the scene pretty well.

Good stuff.

There was some PP, I think I bumped up the greens a little, but this isn't too far from how it was originally shot.

I think even a normal torch in the lap would work too instead of getting the flash to fire.....or if you dont have a flash.
I've seen some of the suction cup rigs for driving....I was amazed at how sturdy they actualy are.....

I keep coming across this one suction mount: PanaVise 809. Costs around $20 after shipping, and it seems to be sturdy enough to use on metal, as well. YouTube has a couple of clips that show it being used on the driver's door, as well as on a motorcycle for example.

Granted, they're using compact cameras at a fifth of the weight of a DSLR, but if you hook the camera strap around the mirror or get it stuck in the door, it should be safe even if the suction wouldn't hold.

Am I getting something wrong here? Otherwise I'm pulling the trigger on this.

Thanks in advance.
