Thank you Baldmountain for bringing this subject up and to everyone for the great discussion and ideas! This gives me more things to try -- still more to learn.

You're welcome!

I think I'm going to side with Aaron. I'm not so sure the TP was the right idea. I think it is time to get a proper book on Lighting. The Stobist guys and others seem to like Light: Science and Magic so that is probably the one I'll get. Then I'll save my lunch money for a off camera flash and a PC cord. The pocket wizards will have to wait.

The first time I put my XSi on full auto and the flash popped up and fired I looked at the resulting picture and it looked like I was shooting in front of some sort of airport runway lighting. I changed the flash compensation to -0.5 or -1 and shot again and got much better results...i.e. not absurdly bright. My flash now stays at -0.5 or -1 and if I need more light I'll just turn it up to 0 or more.

In reaction to the canister, on my oldest sons birthdayparty we were stuck inside due to the rain.
Since my Speedlite 160E (look it up, it's like 20 years old, lol) doesn't have a diffuser available I went looking for a canister since I saw it on DIY-Photograpy once.
Couldn't find one (all black here) and eventually found myself in the attic near the washing machine.
We use these little transparant bowls that look like this for detergent:

So I took one, cut out some space at the edges and put it on the flash.
It worked fine.
I can't use it outside or in crowded places, tho.
It comes off easiliy, so I have to stay careful.
