Question I finally got it... kinda

I'm having a tough time with the manual focus on my 50mm 1.8. I can get the bokeh shape fine, but if I'm focusing on something/someone else they become oof as well. I did manage to get one shot, though not the best.

Any tips for getting better manual focusing results?

First attempt with shaped bokeh

Do you mean when you're not trying to get the shaped bokeh effect? It would be worth getting to grips with manual focusing before adding the cut-out mask.

Have a look at the first post of the recent Bokeh Assignment - useful information and links followed by lots of examples from everyone who contributed.

Awesome to see this posted here! I saw something about it on some forum or blog last week (nad never heard of it before then) and decided it was something I had to try. Now it's official... Heck, I gotta get my tree up and decorated anyway - lol.

I think this technique has been well described in DIY Photography site some time ago. Nonetheless, the execution was amazing!
