Hey! awesome shot!

can someone explain how is it done?

im using a 50mm 1.8 nikon lens and i did the same thing. Using candles behind as my subject. but it didnt come out to the shape i cut out.

Please help.. thanks! =)

It took me a while and then after I got it the first time, it was a "oh thats how" type of thing. Make sure your shape is small enough and make sure you are focusing on something in the foreground and the background is blurred. I does this on my 18-55 kit lens and it works, so your 50 mm should blow mine out of the water!

What settings/fstop/etc on your kit lens are you using? Because I was not able to get a decent result using an 18-55

I'm just reading this now, so if you've already figured it out... disregard this, I just wanted to correct you a bit.
Bokeh is a term that refers to when you have a narrow depth of field and one part of the image is in focus, but the rest is blurry... the blurry blobs are the bokeh... usually the background...

The effect is simmply amazing. I think that I'm going to celebrate Christamas earlier this year.
