Default Winter lights

Here's the result of my first attempts:

Winter lights 2

Camera: Canon EOS 450D
Exposure: 10
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Making a shaped bokeh shot with the default Canon 450d kit lens is quite difficult because of low aperture, but it is possible if you make a really small shape hole (I didn't manage to do that). Looking forward to trying this out with a 50mm/1.8!

Very cool -- you're making me want to try this now! Also, is f/5.6 really the fastest the kit lens goes? (I'm not familiar with it.)

Thanks. It is f/4.5 on 35mm to f/5.6 on 55mm.

This is really neat. Its the first time I have heard of this and I just tried it with the heart shape and the christmas lights. There are a few things I don't understand though. 1. How/why does this work? 2. In the leaf picture, how do you get the subject leaf well lit and in focus 3. Does it work with any light source?
I really like your leaf picture. Thanks for sharing it.

Default blobs

I tried this the other day but my "hearts" ended up looking like blobs. Would a shaped hole punch work better?
