I am new to the forum, and this is the first thread that I browsed through and I think that the shaped bokeh looks amazing! I am working on getting the cut-out right at the moment, and will post pictures as soon as I can.

Default Here is my attempt

I turned it into black and white because I wasn't happy with the way the color turned out, I was actually surprised though that I was able to do it at all!

Question 18-200?

Is this possible on a Nikon 18-200mm lens? I made a small cutout the size of my pinky nail and can get the bokeh shapes, but only a small area of the picture is visible where the cutout is. The rest is covered by the surrounding black paper. I tried making a bigger cutout, similar result. My third try was about the size of 2 pinky nails, and still only about 1/8 of the frame has the image and the rest is black from the surrounding paper.

Does this only work on a 50mm prime? Does the physical length of the lens have anything to do with it?

Thanks!

What is the widest possible aperture on your 18-200mm lens. A typical 50mm will open up to f/1.8 or wider meaning that it is easy to create a smaller aperture with the cut-out that is still large enough to get lots of background bokeh.

This thread has been incredibly informative and inspiring! I love it.

Here are my attempts for the holiday season (with those christmas lights all around me, there were shooting opportunities galore).

Thanks for the idea - this rocks. We made a 'mickey mouse' shaped one and did some shots - they came out real nice! Have a few more to try, and made a light setup in my basement to make it easy.....
