Default Point and shoot flower power

We all know photographers hate showing someone a picture and being told "Wow that's a really nice picture! I wish I had a camera like yours!"

Now I'll admit, DSLRS have more bokeh, they have better ISO performance, they have more dynamic range, shoot faster, better accessories, flash options, the list is endless.

But at the end of the day it still comes down to taking an interesting picture, and I firmly believe that if you can't take one with a point and shoot, none of the bells and whistles on that expensive DSLR will do you any good. If I shot in all auto mode, I'd actually take WORSE pictures as my D80 meter is terrible compared to that on my Canon point and shoot.

All I did to take this shot was stick it on macro mode and get close.

I'm sure other people here can relate? If anyone has any nice shots by point and shoot I'd love to see them. I need someone to forward to the next person who tells me their pictures "Suck because Sony makes crappy cameras."

When I was using a borrowed G9 I found it added some additional versatility to my kit.

I can take just as good a photo with my point and shoot as I do with my 30D.

It is the photographer, not the equipment.

I always bring my point and shoot with me and I actually took some of my best pictures with it.

Oh boy yes, I have heard that "I wish I had a camera like that" when I show pictures to people. I hate it.

One of my best photos, a shot of St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, was taken with a P&S. It was an Olympus model, as I recall, but I don't remember the exact model. The next time I return to New Orleans, I plan on seeing if I can get the same or better quality shot with my XTi, although, there's no way to tell ahead of time if the weather is going to be nearly as cooperative as it was the last time. I shot under ideal conditions when I got that shot with the P&S.

I absolutely agree with that. I watched a Ken Duncan video once and he said that his wife with her point & shoot camera often makes better / cooler pictures than he himself with $1000 of dollars worth of gear. I have been wanting to upgrade to a DSLR for ages, but simply haven't gotten around to it yet; frankly I love carrying around my little trusty Canon Powershot A700 and I love taking macro shots like this one:

A Closer Look

Check out my photostream at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/neetsandre/ for lots more examples.

I take much better macro shots with my point and shoot simply because it is easier to carry it around, easier to take the picture with it and it kind of makes more sense to get CLOSE to the object with it. With my DSLR I don't the same kind of intimacy with the motive.

It also makes quite a difference that many motives come to me when I just have the point'n'shoot in the back (I always do) compared to my weekly photo tours where I look for the subject carrying all the equipment like a donkey. It is like I am trying to plan a coincidence. Who can predict perfect light and the perfect opportunity?
