Default Shutter speed

I'm still relatively new to strobist photography (I'm noticing that you tagged this with strobist). But, wouldn't David point out that if you're lighting the scene with flash, your effective shutter speed is much faster than how long the shutter was open?

Here's a few shots that I took a year ago. In order, there's one at 1/250 second, one at 1/100 second, and one at 1/60 second. Look to see how the waterfall is captured differently in each.

1/250:

1/100:

1/60:

So, depending on what you want to do, you can vary your shutter speed for effect. There seems to be a magic shutter speed around 1/100 - 1/200. Everything below that tends to be mush; everything above it tends to turn to ice.

That said, what Revald did to the water using the flashes is beautiful. Did you restrict the light in any way to keep it off the flower, or did you light the flower as well?

Default Freezing water

Hey..

I thought I would share these two as examples of possible ways to freeze water..
The first one is a small fountain in Val Thorens, France:

Water

the second one, is from the kitchen sink :

Water Droplets

Meadmaker: Yes, David most definetly would The flash discharges much faster than the shutter speed of the camera, but since this scene was already well lit before adding the flashes, lowering the shutter speed would mess up the "freezing" as you point out yourself with the nice 3 image shutter speed tutorial. Shooting the same scene in a completely dark room, you should be able to freeze the water with the flashes alone, even if you had shutter speeds of 1 second or more

With regards to the flower, it was lit by the flashes as well, since both flashes were pointed at the water in a 45 degree angle from each side of the camera. There were no gobo's to restrict the light.

Sander: Like your kitchen sink photo. Great color!
