Im new to photography and am trying out all different styles,i am really interested in the capture of movement style and am currently trying to take a star trail photo. This shot was done in full manual mode with auto focus switched off,an exposure time of around 50 minutes, aperature of 4.5 and iso 100,im using a kit lens 18-55mm and had it zoomed all the way in.It captured the blur in the stars good but as you can see the whole picture is of bad quality.Any suggestions on what has happened and what i can do to fix this.Normally i would just keep experimenting but considering the exposure is quite time consuming i thought id

Hi there im also an amateur in photography but i do have an interest in low light and night photography.
What your experiencing is noise from the long exposure, star trails are better off being taken relatively short exposures and stitched together using a program. I would suggest exposures of 30 seconds. |

50 minutes is probably too long. Also, many cameras have an option for long exposure noise reduction. The camera makes a second exposure (same time/ISO) with the shutter closed, then compares the two, and removes a lot of the noise.

Thanks for the ideas so far,I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.I thought it was "noise" and after taking the picture i found the option on the camera for noise reduction and have now switched that on,i am going to have another go tonight and see how it comes out.
Once again thanks for your input |
