White-Line and Black-Line Lighting | Educational articles and book excerpts on photography topics
The concept of making glass show up in a photo is explained by Dr. Glenn Rand at the above web site and in his book. Here is an image that attempts to demonstrate different glass and how it reacts to light in one image depending on background used. f/20, ISO 160, 50mm. 60 second exposure, no flash, spotlight direct on some elements and bounced off a mirror behind and reflected onto some others. Note that the rim of the near wine glass looks white: reflected light. While the right side neck of the wine bottle is defined by a 'grayish' look which is light bounced off a lighter background and back at the camera through the glass (translucence). Dr Rand shows at the above web site how to capture the defined edges of glass using these two methods. See more at: FrankSchmidt | RedBubble |
