Default Pizza On Fire

The reason I haven't been posting the past several days is that I've been working on this project.

Fire under a pizza. The owner of the pizza cafe ought to be happy with it but I think it can still be improved.

Canon 60D , 50 mm, f/9 (tried f/7.1 but it didn't work) , ISO 160, for 39 seconds in the dark.

The spatula should be pushed up to cover the glass edge. Maybe the pizza could be more level; not so tilted to the left.

I fuzzed the edges of the scene; maybe ok , maybe not.

Comments ? I'm going to keep working on this when Gary Morris ( at Pizza by the Chef) gives me another pizza (I ate this one !)

Thanks Gladiator ! If I can do it, you can do it.

Just set up on a tri-pod, use a remote shutter release ($25 off E-bay) and bulb (B) setting if your camera has it. Then try different settings in the dark using a spot light or flash light to light the scene.

See what you can get and show us; we all learn from eachother.

Okay newbie question sorry!

Why did it have to be this complicated? Why could there not have been more ambient light and a faster shutter speed?

For the flame to register it needed at least 10 seconds. The flame is the "controlling factor".

In all pictures like this the number one question is... "What is the controlling factor of light?"

If it is a starry night photo out doors then the controlling factor of light is the stars..you can't control them, they control the photo and your shutter speed has to be set to register the stars (20 seconds at least). Then you do all the other lighting and settings to fit to that restriction.

Here, the controlling light is the fire. You need at least 10 seconds to show it. If you open the aperture more then the fire will be washed out by the room light, or by your flash if you mistakenly use it.

Low light, f/9 or tighter, no flash, use spotlight or LED flash light , THE LAST thing you do is light the flame and then click off the remote shutter after 10 seconds.

Or try it another way and post your photo here so we can learn from your knowledge. That is what DPS is for.

This is all experimental stuff. If you know of somebody who has done this before then please post a link to their site so we can go there and learn from them. Thanks

Thankyou for the explanation. Sounds like it was a tricky balance to get the environment and the light both correct! I don't envy your task!
