Default Classic ? Still-Life ??

Here's a still-life photo of fruit and candle. What do you think? Could it be improved?

f/20 , ISO 100, 50 mm lens.

To me Frank this image is too cluttered, whole big collection of different fruit etc, candle thrown in plus flowers.

Since this is the 'how I took it' forum... wannna tell us how you took it? How did you make the candle flame look like a star like that?

Hi Frank,

I like the idea of this still life but I think I would take out the pineapple, candle and knife. I think that would have a better flow for the eye, leading it from the top of the orchid to the white cloth in front. I might also go with a non-printed cloth, maybe something dark but reflective.

If you were going for a more cluttery look, then I'd suggest going full force and layering more objects at the pineapple level and maybe using a larger print on the cloth.

I really enjoy this still life by Spanish painter Juan Sánchez Cotán. Might be fun to experiment with framing things this way and the haning fruits. Just a little inspiration!!

I'm new to photography but studied art history. Good luck and thanks for sharing your photo!

Ruth

Set up the scene, camera on a tri-pod set to B (bulb) exposure. Light the candle. Turn off the room lights. Open the shutter and after 2 seconds step in front of the camera to blow out the candle.

Lights are still off, you can't be afraid of the dark. Begin applying light with what ever source you have (hand held spot light, flashlight ect) . Paint light on the scene as needed. Practice until you get it right.

Then turn the room lights on. Finished.

I have to agree with reg_12: there's just way too much going on and no sense of order or direction. It almost feels as though you walked into the kitchen and went "hmm, what do I have lying around..."

Default Question

The apple and pear appear like they were placed in the photo post production.I love the texture of the scarf/table cloth and how you captured the candle flame. Tend to agree with everyone else though...lots going on in the space.
