This Recollections of Travels image did not come out exactly as I’d hoped. Here’s why.

In order to get the diagonals right you really have to elevate some of the elements. I kind of like that anyway because it adds interest to the scene. I don’t care for all the objects in a still life to be flat on the tabletop; just my opinion. I use cd jewel cases under objects because I listen music while working on photography and they are handy.

Now to do that the support for each raised object needs to be hidden which requires fabric covering it (or smoke and mirrors of some type which I’m not good at) . What I had really wanted was to show the burlap with printing on it. But there’ll be fabric and objects to deal with.

This burlap is from a former hobby of home chocolate making where you order the raw cocao beans and roast and process them- the burlap bag looks like a coffee bean burlap bag. I wanted to show it for the ‘South Asia’ effect of the travel picture; but it’s covered up by the fabric hiding the jewel cases under the brandy glass and pictures and sea shell oil lamp. So the effectiveness of the burlap is lost. I tried the burlap on top to hide the cd jewel cases but the wrinkles and the objects mask the printing: not effective either.

50mm lens, Canon 60D, f/22 at ISO 125. With camera on a tripod and quite a dark room. One weak reflected fluorescent light source from camera right for a full 76 seconds.

The lamp wick burned for about 7 seconds. After blowing out the wick I applied spotlight from camera left to objects in this order: the book and passport, in front of glass, to old photos, to oil lamp (it was in total shade of the fluorescent light) and finally to camera. The sequence is important because you don’t want to jump back and forth around the scene and flash glare back at the camera.

You have to be careful with glass; especially curved glass more than the eye glasses or camera lens which are flat. Curved glass shows much more glare . It’s a real challenge to show both sides of a brandy glass or glass jar using a spot light without getting severe glare. For me, it would be impossible using a camera flash or strobe .

If you can light a scene like this using flashes, please do and then show me your picture. I’d like to learn how.

I then took the image to Picasa and cropped it, converted it to sepia and warmed it up a little and signed my name. The background is upholstery fabric on the wall; I don’t add layers or textures.

Getting it in focus was one reason for the f/22 and the constant indirect fluorescent light. Wish I could figure out the burlap !

I think this looks beautiful. The light on the glass is really nice.

You mentioned that you weren't totally pleased with the elevation? (If I understood you correctly) I wonder if you shot from a lower angle, like almost table level, if that would make a difference. I think the burlap bag looks neat on the table.

Really, I think the whole thing looks great. I could spend a lot of time just looking at it! A wonderful piece to hang in an office, too.

What I was trying to say was that one of my main goals was to show the burlap which has lots of writing on it. Printing that looks like the South Asia tone or feel. And I was hoping to get more of that but the elements and the other fabrics obscured that printing and covered the texture of the burlap.

I never could figure out how to bring the evocative feeling of printed burlap into the mood of the scene.
Otherwise I felt like this image was ok. My first real sepia photo.

I see what you're saying. The other elements do kind of overwhelm the burlap. And, really, if you'd tried to stuff it and show it as a full sack instead of on the table you might have lost the feeling you've got going with the glass and the camera. It may have seemed too outdoors, if that makes sense.

At any rate, I still think it's really nicely done. I've found that it can be difficult to incorporate everything that I think I want in a shot and make it work. You did a good job.
