Smile Kendel - "Letting Go"

I posted this over the the people section, but it was suggested I post a little more info here.

I've wanted to shoot this for a while, but it was a matter of finding the right time with the right model.

  • Nikon D700 + 24-70mm/2.8 @ 48mm
  • 2 second exposure, f20, ISO160 (handheld)
  • I tried to remove all ambient light in the studio, Only lighting was from the modelling lamp on the strobe.
  • Alienbees B1600 through white beauty dish with 30 degree grid - from memory on ~1/8 power.
  • 4 flash bursts. 1st flash on shutter open, 2nd, 3rd & 4th flashes triggered by pressing the "test" button on my PW MiniTT1 on camera. Was just a matter of getting the timing right to capture the posing along the way.
  • My arm is still sore from holding the D700 + battery grip + 24-70mm steady in one hand whilst I was busy hitting the "TEST" button with the other hand
  • Model started in the crouched position with hair down, then it was a quick lift and hair flick on the way to the final pose. We practiced the sequence of posing across the 2 seconds to try and get the result I wanted.
  • Processing was a slight desaturation. I preferred that look.
  • I was just hoping to achieve something free and raw - showing movement and emotion.

All comments, questions & feedback are both welcome & appreciated.

Thank you so much for writing this up Daniel! It's good to know you didn't have this elaborate flash trigger set up. That was the main thing I was wondering about. Looks like it took some work, but the end result it fabulous!
Thanks again for sharing how you did this!

Wow! That looks great! You've captured it beautifully. I wonder how it would look if she was flicking her hair from side to side, or around in a circle??? Love it!
