Default Coming to the FInish Line

This was the first day I was out with the new camera and wanted to see what I could do with it. I had taken a number of shots trackside, and was back up in the stands when I took this shot - through a glass window.

Aperture: F/9
Focal length: 200 mm
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/1000 sec
Camera; Nikon D3100
©2011, Mark L. Fendrick

It is severely cropped from the full original.

You can see more shots from this day on my photo blog.

Nice shot. I took a peek are your others and I like them also. If you get out to the track frequently try panning. It gives the illusion of speed.

Could you have gotten away with a loser ISO and still maintain a fast enough shutter speed for what you were trying to accomplish?

Good suggestion and one that I have used in the past.

In retrospect, perhaps. This was the first DSLR I had ever used - coming from an SLR background - Contax RTS - and the first day I was using it so I was a bit unsure of the camera, and in many instances there were better choices to be made.

Thanks for looking and for the suggestions/comments. The nice thing about photography is that no matter how long you have been "doing it", there is always more to be learned, and a different perspective to be considered.

I'm still on the learning curve and have many forehead slapping experiences in my photography. The good news is I'm getting happier with what I get.

Keep at it and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Smile Watch crop

Your pictures are nice however, you need to watch where the crop is. In one picture I see the top of a women's head, another one a persons foot is cut off and yet in another half a horse is cut off. It is very difficult to take good shots at public events, finding the right angle can be very challenging. However, if you would have moved a little to the right, left, down or up it may have made a big difference in your shot. I feel it helps to include more in the original shot and crop down to what you want with a photo editing program. Good eye, just need to refine it!

Thanks for your comments, but I am a bit confused. I have not posted any pictures with people in them. To what are you referring? Do you mean the ones on my photo blog listed below? If so, could you identify which ones?

Yes I refering to the one in your blog. "Soon To Be Competitors" there is on the bottom of the frame the top of a women's head. Also in one of the other pics just of the horse with a women holding on to it, the crop on the right hand side is a bit odd.
