How to Choose a DSLR Camera

Both Canon & Nikon are good brands and can take your photography as far as you want to go (at a cost). What feels better in your hands when you pick it up?

With a DSLR system the zoom range depends on the lens - not the camera body.
With an entry level kit zoom lens it will be ~3X to 5X depending on what lens you are looking at.

This will help.

Hi,
Regarding the brand, just go to a camera shop and take both in your hand and you will love one ... Go for that one.. I select Nikon i think it's a grate choise ... But remmember that all your coming investment in photography will be selected at that moment..

Nikon lenss are not worked with canon body canon flash(speed light) will not work with nikon ... So you will be canon or Nikon for all your life..

I think Nikon D700 or D300s are good .. I have Nikon D90 it is a wonderful kit.. For the lenses, (i ma talking about Nikon) you may need as a starting somthing like 35mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.4. And for a zoom go for Nikon 70-300mm VR,

Model and used vs. new depends a lot on your budget. Pick the one that fits your budget best.

Brand-wise, either get the one all your friends have (so you can share/swap gear) or the one all your lenses are in; or get the one that feels best in your hands and that has the lens selection that works best for what you want to shoot.

This is because a dSLR does not have a fixed lens--you can change the lens you use, and the "zoom" depends on the lens. In dSLR terms, "zoom" is used differently. It doesn't mean the "reach" of the lens. It simply means that the focal length of the lens can vary. The focal length itself determines how much "reach" the lens has. The longer the focal length, the more reach.

The easiest way to translate between the "zoom" of a fixed-lens camera is to look at the specs and find out what the "35mm equivalency" is. The zoom factor is somewhat deceptive, as it's a relative measurement of the zoom capability of the lens, not an absolute one like focal length. They simply take the longest focal length and divide it by the shortest one (i.e., a 6-60mm focal length on P&S is a 10x zoom, because 60/6 => 10).

I agree try them both out they differ in ways you want to use it if for lighting i prefer the nikon. If you want more for the money entry level wise price is a lil cheaper on Canon and I think they offer a 55-300mm lens and nikon only goes up to 200mm. But other than that no big difference..

Default MPs Vs Optical Zoom

Hello All,
Thanks a lot for the guidance.
I have one more confusion while purchasing the SLR.
Should I buy a high MPs + Lesser zoom OR less MPs + Higher Zoom OR High MPs + higher Zoom.
For beginners what is suitable if we dont think of cost and how will it matters while taking snaps?

More megapixels allows larger sized prints, and lets you crop your photographs without losing as much detail than photos shot at lower resolutions.

Longer focal lengths (telephoto / zoom) give you more magnification so it's possible to fill your frame with your subject and not have to run right up to them to do so. Telephoto lengths also tend to compress the background and can be useful for portraiture.

Which is better for you? We don't know, you have to decide that for yourself!

Default D3100

I'm very happy with my Nikon D3100--I mostly shoot landscapes, outdoor recreation, and outdoor portraits. Its lightweight enough to carry in a daypack, has a 14 megapixel sensor, and didn't break the bank. I would have bought the D7000 if I had the cash, but alas...

I wrote a comparison of the D70 and the D3100 for PhotoHow2.com, in case you're thinking of picking up a used Nikon. Good luck with your purchase.
