Default How to get a starshaped sun

Its always been a "NO NO" when it comes to photographing towards the sun, but i honestly really like the effect of taking such images, creating the silutes and creatinga very drastic contrast between the ground and the sky. The other day i realised that taking pictures of the sun att bigger appretures (f/5.6 for exampel) tha the sun came out like a round ball, rather dull, like in the image below:

Then i decided to go for a smallerr appreture (f/22 for exampel) and i realised that the sun had had become much more intresting then it was in the previous photograhp, it obtained a star like shape which added alot to the feeling of the image. Here is an exampel (note that the exampel picture isnt great and there seems to be some dust and whot not on the lens but it illustrates what i was walking about)

note the lens flare, which can easily be avodided by using a hood or simpley by covernig the lens with your hand!

NOTE: This will not damage your sensor in any way because your camera will be using very high shutter speeds if your shooting on A mode or Tv mode! So there inst going to be a problem!

I think it is a cool effect.

Just because no one responds does not mean that no one shows interest in it - there are 45 views.....

Hi Alex,

Nice example of what the aperture setting does when you're looking directly at the sun! Although I'm not sure if a lens hood would help much as I'm guessing the lens flare is caused directly by the sun, and not off reflections from out of the frame. Lens hoods only stop stray light coming in from outside the frame.

At the rate this site is growing, there will be a lot of posts looked over. I've posted images, and checked a couple hours later, and they wood be 3 pages back. Just because someone doesn't reply to your thread, doesn't mean they didn't enjoy or appreciate your work.

So you make a big deal over someone not thanking you over the course of hours? I hadn't even looked in here, and I'll bet some other people hadn't either.

If you have something to share, then you should. Please don't hold back just because you have one instance like this.

Forums have 'off' times, times when the people who may take an interest in your post are off at work, sleeping or hanging with their friends. And has already pointed out, it's a busy time for the forums. Don't take it personal Alex. Some people are just lurkers or don't feel they have anything constructive to say. Again, don't take it personal. People are just busy.

Edit: Yeah, I know how those kind of days go.
