Default Water Ballon Bursts

Sharing some experiments with water ballons

The Burst

My high speed balloon blasting experiments !!!!

Canon 1000D + 50 -250mm Lens
YN468 flash set at 1/128th Power manual mode + CTR 301 remote trigger + 20 Baloons

No flash triggers ( Sound based or Laser beam based HS photography triggers) used here. Camera set at 5sec exposure... held the CTR trigger in my left hand and needle in the right.

pierce the baloon with needle and simultaneously press the test fire button on the Master trigger to fire the flash.

Pure Hand coordination + practice required here..

Pls leave a comment if you like my Experiment.

Very cool but I reckon it would look better if you took a fast series of photos as the water fell, rather than just one? Why did you have the camera set for such a long exposure?

Also, is there some way of piercing the balllon from the bottom rather than the top? That might look cool too.

Very awesome idea and photos!

HI Emy

Thanks for your comment

Note - Its not the camera shutter speed but the Flash which is freezing the action for you.

balloon burst happens very quickly 1/5000 to 1/10000 of a sec. SLR have a max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec hence its not possible practically to freeze motion with fast shutter speed. The flash at low output (1/64th -1/128th power) produces a very short burst of light in the range of 1/15000 sec to 1/20000 sec.
The trick here is to shoot the image in a dark room with camera shutter kept open and let the flash light freeze the action for you.

Correct me if Iam wrong.

Interesting, thanks. For some reason I thought the balloon would take a half to full second to go from popping to empty and thought you could get a few frames in that time but I guess not! Well done with such a difficult to capture situation.

Default Nice

This is a neat experiment! The images are crisp and very abstract. I love the colors and how they pop off the screen! Very creative and intuitive.

Default Nice tips on the shutterspeed and flash light thing..

The first burst was full and you can literally see(almost) the direction and motion of water particles going to happen. Couldn't figure out the background though.
The second burst is more of like 3/4th and you see the path of tearing of the balloon in the water scars..Nice work man..

Very well done. I like the technique as well. I like the low-tech (no triggers) technique.

This is an awesome experiment! I should definitely try it some time! And thanks for the idea to capture the frame using the flash rather than a really fast shutter speed! I think that will come in handy for a lot of other experiments as well! TFS!
