If you want to get more DOF you can put the lens on the normal way and then set your aperture to what you want and then hold in the dept of field preview button, while holding it in unscrew the lens from the camera. You can also buy cheap extension tubes that has no AF or contact points which will allow you to get macro shots without turning your lens backwards...

You can get cheap tubes on ebay. Less than 10 bucks for a set of tubes that has no contacts. The ones with contacts is about 60 bucks. extension tubes | eBay

To do this with a Nikon you have to set the camera to manual.
