I applaud you for thinking outside the box, but unless those runners were breaking the sound barrier, you probably didn't need more than 1/400 shutter speed (or somewhere around there). If that were the case, then you could down the ISO to 250 and have the same exposure.
I don't shoot a ton of sports, so I could be missing something here. But I do shoot birds in flight, which I believe move much more quickly than humans on foot. ![]() Either way, very nice shot that accomplished exactly what you wanted! The DOF and your use of narrow aperture is spot on.

I have only done one track meet, but I do a lot of volleyball, and honestly, depending on the movement, anything slower than 1/1000sec does cause some blur in the arms and especially fingers. You did a bang-up job on that picture! I have to use ISO 1600 or even 3200 for my indoor vball games, and while it is noisier than your shots, parents don't seem to notice when buying pictures. I'm glad also that you showed us a result with no post-processing work done to it. When you shoot 3000+ pictures per tournament like I do, you'll know that the less PP work you do, the more hours you'll save.
