First of all,
This is a very very nice and sharp shot. Also good colours. Congratulations!
What you say is very logical. If you cant have a very long shuttertime, use a higher ISO. (I wonder if professional sport photographs also do this.). Did you do any post processing? Becaus I see absolutely no noise

good idea. i wonder if you did a burst shot for this moment? it's usually a good thing to do so... i know the nikon d60 has this "make your own moving scene picture" in camera, and i think it's the first in its kind... afaik

but im still wondering how can the sky now overexposure and the runner not under exposed?
what metering do you use? or do you use flash as the fill in light?!
im still wondering

Great picture! Love the colors, good exposure (that's always my issue), not really seeing much grain & SHARP.

Also someone said you might not need that fast of shutter...Just for reference I take horse pics and 1/1000 will stop all but the fast runners. These girls probably aren't running that fast

There is so much to learn with this stuff. It's a little overwhelming, but so interesting. I have a new nikon d300. I keep reading and reading and really appreciate the little tips.
