Default "dodging" a photo

I took a picture of a storm coming over the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas a few weeks ago. It looked like a natural for a BW conversion but I was unhappy with the final result. I went back to the color image and simply used the "brush/dodge" tool (30 second job) to slightly lighten the foreground and give me a much better balanced picture I think.

The BW conversion from the original color:

The BW version with the "dodged" foreground:

Yes, much better! The balance is really good in your dodged image. Beautifully done.

Very nice end result.

It would be interesting to see if you could have gotten the same sort of result by playing with the color sliders in the B/W conversion window

I love this shot! This totally reminds me of the movie Independence Day when the ships come in.

Fantastic work with brush/dodge.

Default In lightroom?

Great job!

But I would have naturally done the same thing in Lightroom on the RAW file (with the graduated filter).

Any reason why you did it with the dodge tool (Photoshop I'm assuming?) - any advantages?

Thanks,

Glyn

Just the tool I had at hand and new how to use. Don't have lightroom, seldom see any benefit in shooting raw files. Only advantage I can think of is it took 10 seconds to do and didn't cost me anything. (-:}

You caught a great moment, that shot is worthy of a poster imo. If I didn't read your post I might have guessed it was an HDR shot. Thank you for giving me another idea for options in post work.

Cheers.

Edit: Ha I followed your Divantart link and there you say the original(in colour) is an HDR. funny. Still a great shot.
