Default Reading Terminal shot

R T original reading terminal

I had received a few comments on this shot and was asked how I did it. Thank you so much for asking!

I started out in LR3 by converting the image to B&W and cropping it to make the old man the focal point. Then I brought it into PSCS5 where I softened all the edges except the old man where I created a mask and used the sharpening tool to make him pop out of the softness. Then I went back into LR3 where I placed a graduated filter to the top right corner coming down and reduced the brightness by 30% or so. Then did the same thing in the lower left corner coming up. I wanted the old man to be the most important element in the scene so I placed a third graduated filter directly over him and increased the brightness to really pull your eyes to him first. And that was pretty much it!

Thanks for your sharing. Wonder if we can make the same effect from free software tool liked GIMP?

Default LR v PS

Rosserx, thanks for taking the time to explain how you achieved this shot.
Can I ask why you jumped between LR and PS? Is one better than the other at doing certain jobs?

Once again thanks for sharing

To make a selection mask for what I wanted to do, I needed a new layer. That's why I used PS. LR doesn't do layers. I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Different tools for different jobs.

I really love what you've done here.
I'm not sure if it was your intention, but I get a sense that the old man is plodding slowly through the day while the world whizzes by at speed.

Thanks Lisa! That's a very nice interpretation. I'll go with that

Thanks for the memories. I was born and raised in Philly but haven't been to the Reading Terminal in ages since I've moved to Reading, PA.
