Default My favorite portrait

I made this photo while traveling in India, in Kerala. My wife had stopped to grab a bottle of water, and I was captivated by this man and his contrasting colors. I lifted my camera, pointed to it, pointed to him and sort of said "Please?" with my eyes. He nodded in approval and my favorite portrait ever.

Every once in a while in life I end up in the right place at the right time. I don't have the speed or aperture at-hand, and they aren't what's critical to this shot. The craft (exposure, focus) was easy. It's the art that 'came together' here.

The perfect camera bag is a myth, just as the perfect purse, Sasquatch, and the Loch Ness Monster.
Photographic serendipity, however, happens.

jto,
It's a captivating image. I'm surprised it hasn't garnered any commentaries yet.

Perhaps it's because it's in the "How I took it" section. There is no "tutorial" per se in regards to the technical side of your image, which is the purpose of the "How I took it" area of DPS. This image, in my estimation, would be more suited to the SYS (Share Your Shots) section, subcategory - People.

A well done image nevertheless.

Welcome to DPS!

Default How I Took It

OK, I guess I can buy that...

Nikon D70
1/100th @ F/5
ISO 200
Matrix metering

Like I said, I think the craft of making the image is less important in this photo than the interaction. I left matrix on because I've been happiest with that over spot metering (Nikon's metering just keeps getting better and better). When I'm traveling through India, I like to take spontaneous shots and the matrix metering helps.

The critical component to this shot is the human element of gaining permission. I only had a few minutes, and I didn't speak this gentleman's language, so hand gestures and expressions were it. It simply taught me to not be afraid--never be afraid--to ask.

Nice pic but in my opinion you need to clone out the add in the top left corner and get rid of the folded paper near his foot. Also try cutting a centimeter or two of the left and under the feet to decentralize him.
