Default Fire Drink

Fire Drink 2

Fire Drink

These two pictures were taken at different times of day, but the thought process behind each is similar. The top picture has ice frozen at the bottom. I put it on the black background at night. Then, I filled the top with Ronsonoil Lighter fluid. Light the fluid and burn away. I played with different shutter speeds, but found that longer ones just didn't define the flame well enough. This particular one I took at 1/50s. In post, I adjusted white balance and decreased contrast on the bottom of the cup so it looked more "icy".

The bottom picture, each cup was filled with Rubbing Alcohol and lit. I took it during the day.

One word of caution, plan on just letting the alcohol or lighter fluid run itself out rather than trying to put it out. Putting it out will break your cup. I figured this out on the 4th cup I broke today. Sigh.

Nice shots. Other than letting them burnout, how did you try to put them out?

Agree - nice shots.

Would putting a saucer over the cups put them out without breaking them? It works for those little febreeze candles in jars, and the smoke makes this awesome toroid shape (think doughnut made of smoke)

Actually, that's exactly what I was doing! I put a saucer over the cups and crack! The more I'm thinking about it, if you add enough hot water, that may put out the fire without cracking the glass. I'm not sure, but it may work.

Nooo.... don't add water to an oil fire. That is a recipe for a nasty explosion. Seriously, I've seen it demonstrated.

if it's rubbing alcohol it won't explode because there's no oil involved

Fire is a lot of fun, I do worry about glass breaking with the cold and hot fire. Great shot!

Fire is tons of fun! I think if you heated the water before putting it in the glass, it's less likely the glass would shatter. I'm not positive, but it makes sense to me. Truly the best bet, I think, is to just let the fire burn out. From what I've read it takes about 10 min for a cup of alcohol to burn out.
