Default Waiting for a Flight...

Don't Know When I'll Be Back Again

I had a few hours to kill in Shanghai-Pudong Airport, waiting for my flight back to the states. While this is always a disappointment, I try to maximize my time by getting some shots in an otherwise inaccessible environment.

I always take my Nikon D700, 24-70 f/2.8 Nikkor lens, and a Gorillapod when traveling abroad and this was the kit used here.

I mounted my D700 to the tripod and used Point Focus to pinpoint a spot on the track a certain number of segments in front of me, as I was standing just off the conveyor. I then switched the focus mode to Manual as to lock down that distance and set the shutter to a delayed timer of 10 seconds.

I looked around to see what odd looks I was receiving, hopped on the conveyor, set my kit down on the center of the belt, and hit the shutter. I then walked up that same number of segments and stood very still.

I set my ISO as low as possible and my Aperture to the smallest setting (largest f/#) in order to maximize the amount of time I could shoot before completely overexposing everything. This turned out to be ISO 100 @ f/22 @ 4 seconds.

I just kept riding back and forth until I thought I had enough decent ones to choose from, then ran down to catch my flight back home.

What a clever idea! I will be in an airport in less than a month and can't wait to experiment with this kind of shooting thanks!

Almost every good shot I've ever taken caused people to give me odd looks. If you're standing upright taking photos of obvious subjects, from obvious perspectives, the result will be...obvious, and your photos won't stand out.

Get in the habit of causing people to wonder, "What the heck is he/she photographing and why?" If you do, your shots are sure to improve...

This is a really cool shot, it think it would sell really well on the stock sites (if you are ever that way inclined )
