Default Fruit Splash :)

Strawberry-Splash

This is my first time making one of these and after a basic search I didn’t find any how I took it on this so here goes.

First of all I don’t claim any kind of credit for inventing this it’s been around and tons of people do it a few basic Google searches will even find you a how to on this sort of thing but there wasn’t any here ( I think lol)

Ok first thing I did was think about what kind of fruit I wanted to photograph I made a trip to the store and bought all sorts of fruits and veggies.

Ok for my setup I used a 10 gallon fish tank and filled it with 5 gallons of spring water. I read using tap water can give you hard water lines. I set up my camera a few feet in front of the tank with a soft box to my left facing into the tank.

I had another flash behind the tank facing the back of the tank and a third flash facing a white backdrop.

I started off using a lot of power from my strobes and a high f stop but I found that I was getting a little more blur then I wanted and I have read that less energy being disbursed from the flash tube can make for a faster strobe so I lowered my f stop to f 8 and lowered the power of all my strobes.

Here is a picture of my setup with my camera phone

photo

My wife dropped the fruit for me and yes sometimes we had to do it a few times before we got some good ones but it was fun and worth it.

My advice make sure to have some towels handy lol also have fun with it I even dropped pizza in it and it kind of turned out fun :P

My camera info
Canon 7D
lens Canon 70-200mm 2.8L is ii
iso 100
f 16 then f8

Any questions please feel free to ask if you have advice for me please feel free to share but don’t be negative or a jerk forums can be a scary place to open up and this is my first time sharing so please enjoy

Looks like Im going to have to buy a fish tank again. I can think of several things I could use a fish tank for (other than for fish lol)
Guess I'll hit the garage sales this next summer. They are always a dime a dozen there.

Love the pics and the tutorial.

Here's my try from a couple weeks ago:
The Ol' Berry Drop
This was thanks to pascalbovet.com 's tutorial help.

Ive got to get another strobe so I can work some color in the BG.

Again, nice work.

Cowking,
Awesome pics and great tutorial. The pics of the setup really helped.
Just curious since I didn't see it in your description, what was your shutter speed for these pics? Is it the fast shutter speed or strobe (or combo of both) that freezes the action?
TFS.

Strobes control the stopped motion i was using 1/160 shutter i imagine if i got lower then 1/80th or less then MAYBE i would get more blur

take what i say like a grain of salt cuz im no pro lol

but thanks much i also did some other fruit macro the same night and been thinkin about showing my setup for that

Thanks for your reply. I think I need to get some strobes next. I've been working on freezing water drops but have not been successful.
The pics you showed here turned out beautifully, especially the lemon/lime pic.
I'd like to see the fruit macros too when you get them posted.
