Default First "real" photo with the new camera

So, I was itching to get that first composed shot from my camera. So I went for something easy. I used Auto for this as well, cuz I was afraid to venture beyond it just yet. ( Just got my DSLR 2 days ago.)

This was my ghetto set up: Home made light diffuser/tent at the back, with a bolt of 5 yards of black fabric sitting on top of it, the fabric sweeping down to try and create that seamless look. The door to a CD case, sitting on top of fabric on table. Glass goblet with red water on top of CD case. Desk lamp covered with white fabric to diffuse light some to right of set up in a chair. All other lights turned off.

The Set Up:

The Before Shot:

The After PP Shot:
DSC_0014-1

I shot this in RAW, cuz everyone says shoot RAW. Then I learned that when you shoot RAW, you have to convert it before something like Gimp will recognize that its there. So, got the plug-in for that.
The PP Breakdown:
All I did was select the glass and the bit of reflection, then invert the selection so that the background and CD case would be selected. Adjusted curves to mask out the background. Then used the clone tool to "erase" the edges of the case, and the dust and all that. Then inverted selection again, touched up the saturation [I]just[I] a tad. Saved as JPEG, then brought it up in Picasa to straighten just a tad. Theres a bit of a ripple on the left side of the stem,... thats from the quick scissor selector messing up what its selecting. I was too tired to fix it, as this was also just a trial run of sorts as well.

I know this is such an overdone shot,.. but I was itching to do something. And I love these lil glasses. TFL! Questions/Comments/Critique are welcomed.

If I took that photo after having my dslr for two days I'd be very excited. Imagine what you'll produce when you've had it for a year.

The picture looks pretty good. I'm loving the towel over the lamp. You created a softbox.

Thanks guys. I've cleaned it up a lil since then. Fixed the ripple look on the left of the base. I'll post some that I took in Austin after I finish with them, in another section. Had some troubles with getting a RAW converter that worked right.
