Back on Aug 27th, I attempted to post a photo that captured the raw beauty of what I was hoping to be a North Carolina rough ruby. It was later identified as a Rhodellite Garnet. Nonetheless, I've been experimenting with gem photography, and this one turned out quite interesting, with unexpected results.
The exterior is rather dull until lit with an LED pen light. Tripod was missing at time of photo so heart rate was minimized, breath control was optimized for a steady shot of my wife's fingers holding both the stone and the light source. Canon 6.2 megapixel DSLR Rebel ISO 100 Exp 1/10s Shutter 1/10s f/stop 5.6 Aper 5.6 55mm No color corrections or post processing performed on this photo.

It's intersting how the red transitions to an intense pink along the edges, and I like how the fingers have a glowing edge too. My biggest surprise was the fact that this stayed in focus. As I get older, I can't hold 'er as steady as I used to. In years past, 1/4 second shutter speeds were as slow as I could go with good breath control.
