Default Lighting for Texture

Howdy Folks!
I would like to share with you another good technique.

Pretty much everything around us has unique texture. Emphasizing on texture when creating an image will make it even more unique and aesthetically appealing.
The most important thing to consider when emphasizing on texture is the position of the light source. The source may be Sun or Flash, Tungsten Light, Candle light pretty much any light. But where it is positioned, in relevance to the subject and camera, will determine how well the texture will show up.
Here are the basic TIPS:

1. The light should skim along the top creating highlights on the edges and shadows in reliefs.
2. Shadows should be directed towards the camera, thus the light should come from behind the subject
3. Note that Direct light or on camera flash does the opposite (it flattens and hides the texture)

You can watch this step by step video: lighting for texture
here is my shot from the Video:

Let me know if you found this technique useful. What's the most textured thing you ever photographed???
cheers!

Beautifully done and as always, very informative. This method really brings the feel of the texture out. TFS.

Hey Robert!

Just watched your video. Great delivery, clear instructions and short enough to hold my attention. LOL

But more importantly, a wonderful little tutorial to help newbies, professionals and everyone else in-between. It even shows us all how to do it on a budget :0) No one has excuses now and let our imaginations take us the rest of the journey.

Keep up the great work!
