Default dark zoo??

how do people do this to their photos? i mean its obvious how but is there a technique to it? a special way to do it that makes then look so damn good?..im sure id blindly just tweek everything in the hope eventually it would look right ..

The general idea behind taking a photo that has a dark background like that is to have the subject in a room that is darker than the light that is shining on it - you then set your exposure for the light that's coming in, leaving the rest of the picture way underexposed.

As long as the light being shined on the subject is sufficiently brighter than the surrounding light, you should be sweet.

The room doesn't even need to be overly dark, you just need that difference in the light. I took this photo about 10am one morning standing just inside a doorway and the light was just sunlight shining through the door.

(maybe not the best photo, but you get the idea - needed only minimal processing to make B&W and darken up slightly)
