Default Run! (Unique action shot)

Run like the wind

Camera: Canon EOS 50D
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 10 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

Hello everyone! This is one of my most popular photos on Flickr and I have recieved a lot of questions about it. As you all know, my photos are very simple to shoot. Here is how I took this shot and you can do the same:

1. Plan out the shot -- have an idea of where you want your subject to be in the frame. Composition and perspective are what make a wide angle action shot like this have an impact. The lower you can get the better.

2. Camera settings. I chose f/5.0 for a somewhat shallower depth of field and a shutter speed of 1/250 for slight motion blur. I did automatic focusing and set focus to a point where I thought my subject would hit. The lighting is all natural, no flash was used.

3. Laying on the grass, I composed to where my subject (little brother) would be running a path slightly crossing my point of view. He was running about 1ft. from the side of me.

Shoot away and have fun with it!

I love this shot! I would love to do this at a race track one day, on the inside barrier. The only reason I haven't as yet is I'm scared of how much mud would be flying at my camera!

Thanks for the explanation and tips!

Simple and effective. Nice shot and write-up.
Squidypoo, I don't know what camera you're using, but if you have a wireless trigger, you can put your camera in a plastic bag with an opening for the end of the lens. Using a "UV" filter will protect the surface of your lens. I'd love to see the shot, if you try it.

I can see why it's so popular... I will have to become one of your contact... I have recently done some 'ground-level' shots that turned out great... I think now I will post them on Flikr... here is one on Picasa Picasa Web Albums - Pam

It's a great effect and has such a "little-boy" feel.

Yes you get my vote too.
The steps described on how to take the photo do sound easy like most tutorials, different matter when I pick up the camera though.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice shot on Flikr, Pam, thanks for sharing. Did you use the same settings as the main shot in this thread?
