Talking The challenge to beat the Pro!

Whilst on holiday in Lanzarote for Easter, there were several pictures around the hotel of the inside of the rooms. However, the view of the balcony and sky outside of the rooms were completely burned out. My wife said, "That's not very good is it, I bet you could do better than that?"

Doh! "I thought" - now I just had to have a go didn't I?

Here's my attempt:

OK, I was just trying to get the overall exposure correct rather than getting a great photo - (I'd have straightened the bed otherwise), but here's how I did it.

1) Canon 24-105 lens at 24mm
2) Hand-held, I bracketed 3 shots a 2 stops apart
3) Using CS4, I opened the best shot of the room correctly exposed, deleted the window containing the burned out balcony and sky.
5) Created a new layer underneath the first layer and inserted a shot of the balcony correctly exposed and Voilà!

Well, it got my wife's approval anyway

Excellent shot Jeff. In a nutshell, this is basically HDR in order to increase the tonal range of the image.

Thanks Tony, much appreciated.
I resisted using the term HDR as it covers a miryad of things; usually over-blown artisic effects. I'd prefer to say it's and "Exposure Fusion" or "Exposure Merge" because there's no tone mapping involved.

Very nice, do you have both images you used for the layers for a before and after?

Perfect! I love it.
Very nice.. good example of how using two differently exposed images can be seamlessly put together to make an awesome photo!
Did you get a chance to show it to the hotel manager?

Excelent work!! That is closer to exposer blending then HDR. Same concept though. Too bad you didn't tidy up the bed. You could have sold it back to the hotel.

But the real question is did the Pro make sure that both beds were made cleanly / wrinkle free?
