Once again, sorry for the late reply...

It was well after dark when I took the shot. And, since the only light in the shot was in the umbrella, it didn't spill over into much of the scene, so you get the black surrounding that I was going for. If I'd have used a second or third light, much of the environment would have been illuminated. This could have been a positive or negative depending on your aim. For example, I'd like to try this on a city street at night where much of the scene is illuminated, but not exactly well lit...
