Dog Profile

I wanted to get a profile of my mom's dog as I saw her one morning standing in front of a large window, back lit by the incoming light and the image showed promise.

I had someone out of frame distract her while positioning a SB-600 unit directly behind her and out of view. With my D300 and an 18-200mm lens (zoomed to 200mm) I took the photo.

The firing of the SB unit made the hair that surrounds Heidi pop as the light passed through. This setup naturally produced the silhouette that you see but increasing the Black Point in Aperture added to the effect and produced the results shown here. Also, while the shot was basically a black and white from the start, due to the dog's color, I went ahead and removed all color from the photo, as I didn't see a need for it to be present...

Excellent Shot!

I had a Schnauzer as a kid! Quite the dog!!!!

If you send that shot to me in high quality....I'd love to engrave it in Marble or Granite for ya!

Thanks.

So, how do you go about engraving it?

Nice, I like this a lot. I'll have to try and see if I can do something similar.

Ryan,

I sent you a PM.....

I use a laser to engrave many different substrates..... Now trying to get my photography skills up to par to engrave more architectural pictures.

Dogs & Horses have always been my favorite subjects for photography....as I used to professionally train and campaign dogs around the U.S.A.

Default Nice portrait...

Great idea. I can see that it would work better on a rough coated dog with a distinctive profile like a schnauzer. I am going to try the technique with my Goldendoodle...

Awesome. I'm going to have to try this with my Schnauzer!
