For this shot and all other self-portraits, I try to grab something that's tall (usually my wife) to place where I'll eventually stand. A wife is a good choice because she's mobile and you can see what position is best with a human subject.

Anyway, once I have my spot, I focus on whatever I've chosen as my placeholder. I then mark the place where that item/person was and then switch my camera to Manual Focus Mode (M) which will 'lock it in.' Then, regardless of what the lighting is like, as long as you stand on your mark, you'll be good to go...

LMAO this was too funny. Just grab a wife and you're fine lol. I sometimes wonder, is it me who has to be patient with my wife when she complains I spend too much time with the camera, or she must be patient with all the crazy ideas and experiments, and time of course? I guess both sides should be understanding...

Great shot by the way, I will def. try this soon

Thanks. Yeah, having a wife there can really quicken the pace of an experiment, as you don't have to keep running back and forth to and from camera. "Hey, babe, can you come here for just a few minutes?"

I think with us, it's a two way street. I spend a lot of time, and way too much money on this stuff. But, it's my one true passion aside from the family. And, unlike other passions, there's an end result; something you can see and show, and use for remembrance, etc... So, while she makes fun of me and complains when I hound her about the next lens I have my eye on, she also really appreciates the photos we have, especially those of our son...

Really love the effort you put in. It truly paid off. This is one of the best photos I've seen in a while. Perfect exposure and composition. It is currently one of my favs! Keep 'em coming, please.

Only been on the site for a few days, but I got to admit, 3 out of my top 10 photos I've seen so far have been from your portfolio. Excellent work and creativity.
