Twenty years ago, I got married (somehow still with the same lady), and hired a professional photography to do the wedding. We went to his studio and looked at the work etc.

The fellow who actually hit the release button on the camera was a GM line worker and a "weekend warrior". This was during the film days, when Men were Men and SLR's scared the world. The fellow did an excellent job and we were happy with the results.

I don't remember a time during my adult life that there were not "weekend warriors" doing weddings in some capacity. Many of my friends & associates have had their albums done by someone with a day job. They maybe more prolific today, but they were always there.

Its like the word trained CK. My wife and I were at an accident scene where a woman had a few nasty cuts to her face. My wife being a nurse was straight into looking after her. A woman came pushing through the gathering crowed proclaiming to be a "Trained" Nurse and a medical "professional" to make herself look good she cant have been more than 23 or 24.

Without even flinching my wife says "A trained nurse?" forms her arms into a hoop and says "then jump through this before you **** off" and continues comforting the injured woman while the crowd had a giggle.

But with photography the term professional isn't so much a demand to be known as such (except by some egos) but a term associated with people that make their living from photography. The title Professional Photographer has become more of a distinction that had to be made because nearly everyone has a camera and takes pictures. Some of us take really good pics on really good gear and call ourselves photographers but dont make a full time wage from it. Others do. the distinction professional photographer is easier to say than. "Jim is a trained full time photgrapher that earns his living with his camera equipment"

Yes there are those that demand the title. Then there are those that deserve it. Regardless of it being a continuing hobby or moving into full time work I will always be just a photographer.

Exactly my point. We're ALL just photographers. Granted, they're are some that are "good" photographers and some that are "sucky" photographers. The "good" ones will make more money than the "sucky" ones...

I don't really think she was implying you are not talented. Maybe she meant that a "profesionnal" lives with his photography?

I feel the best way to adress this is by gently remind her that a camera is just a tool and the people behind it makes the difference.

Edit: Welp, kinda chimed LATE on this one. I'll be changing the thread setting to "linear", seems "threaded" is not what I was thinking...

I have found the iso capabilities of the 5D to be just awesome....I am very happy with the clarity at 1600, yet was throwing photos out of the 40D at 800 due to noise.

That alone has made the 5D cost (ebay $1400 Australian) worthwhile. I went for the mark 1 as I couldn't justify the mk 11 cost as a hobbyist and can always buy one in a few years time 2nd hand when the mk 3 or whatever comes out.

Using the 16-35L mk11 on the 5D (particularly in low light) can't be much different from dying and going to heaven!

I think the wide lenses are very suited to the full frame sensor, but often use the 40D and 70-200 f/4 in good light situations...iso is not an issue and the extra zoom and shutter speed is nice at sporting events etc.

Paul.

How do you feel about the high-ISO capabilities of the 5D vs the 40D?

Good to hear, I'm looking at the same upgrade. I can't shoot over ISO 400, even with noise reduction software. I have a plan to go with prime lenses, we'll see. Thanks!

I just made the jump from a T1i to a 5DMarkII.

The high ISO stuff is insane. Just messing around the house, I was taking shots at ISO 3200 that looked really nice. Can't wait to try it at a wedding next weekend.
