I buy a lot of my stuff (ok almost all of it) from Ebay...I'm patient and I make sure I get a great price, but I also generally know exactly what I want and what is a "good deal". You are taking some risks buying used from an "unknown", and to me that means the price should reflect that.
Overall, I've probably saved 40% from "retail".

If you want brand new equipment, I second WooD's recommendation. I absolutely love B&H and buy from them 98% of the time. I purchased my battery grip from Adorama and had absolutely no problems with the transaction.
If you want second-hand equipment, then eBay is a good place - you just have to know what to look for when it comes to equipment and sellers. I bought my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM IS lens on eBay and have no complaints. (I got it for less than 75% of the price B&H lists it for.) It can be a great way to get good deals on equipment. You can also check Craig's List. Although, in my area, there aren't too many listings for DSLR users.

I have bought from Adorama and Abes of Maine with no problems. I'm getting ready to order more gear from B&H. I have heard such good things about them.
