Does anyone here Geo Tag there images? I was thinking of buy a device to add the Geo tag info to my images while I'm out here visiting different countries.

I do it after the fact, using flickr's map interface. Much cheaper, if I remember where I was -- but in your case, maybe not.

In my case I can't use flickr on the ship. I know it would be cheaper but I'm on a boat...:-)

I have a GPS which I used to hook up to my D300 and can hook up to my D3. But it takes up the 10pin socket so I have to remove it to use a remote release. Mine mounts to velcro on the camera strap. (it's a "home brew" concoction I made a few years ago).
There are several you can get on ebay which are hotshoe mount and have a remote release cable that plugs into it for about $100.

I have the Nikon GP-1. It was fine the first month, but now can't get any satellite connections. Just ordered a new one from another company. It's sitting at home waiting for me. I like them. It automatically embeds in the EXIF and in turn, does the same on my flickr map when I upload a picture.
Do YOU need one? That is for you to decide. It is pretty neat to be able to pinpoint where you were on any given picture. They're not to expensive. In the $100-$150 range. I do wonder what the Navy's stance on this might be, I have no idea, but something you may want to check into before getting one. You know, top secret classified mission and all that. Don't want to see you getting in trouble.

Does the camera recognize the GPS? If not, you may need to reset the GPS's baud rate. There is software out there to do that with.

A question if I may, albeit probably a dumb one. As an Amateur/Hobbyist, what is the purpose of Geo Tagging an image?
I mean I know what it does in giving the exact location of a shot, but how is this information useful afterwords? What do people use it for? Is for sorting/searching/finding images in a collection? TIA |

Geotagging can help you remember where that really cool thing was. Right now, I'm working with a fellow on flickr -- neither of us can remember where a particularly weird sign was, and so I'm going to have to go drive around in that general area and figure it out! Geotagging would have helped a lot in that case.
