I've started to get into the habit of toting along a little moleskin with me to record the conditions/lighting of particular locations to help me add to my photography skills.
Today I was curious if there was an online alternative to carrying around a moleskin all the time. Has anyone come across such a site to record details of a photography trip? Thanks

I was referring to just having a notebook to record different things that you can refer back to at a later date.

I too have a moleskin that I use regularly. It really is to help me remember potential shooting places, tips I've gotten on settings and lighting, ideas for future shoots, and sometimes record how I got the shot. I hardly think it is a waste of time. I refer back to it pretty often.

I've heard it suggeste dmore than once that budding photographers carry a notebook to jot down the conditions of a shoot, what they were thinking and feeling, any issues they ran into or ideas they had, notes about possible future shoots... this is all valuable info that if you have a horrible memory, like me, you'll want written down. It's not about remembering settings so you can use them again. It's about remembering what settings combined with what scene produced your results. It's about how your thoughts and feelings at that moment impacted your shot. The EXIF data can tell us what was happening in the camera, but it can't tell you what was happening in the twelve inches behind it. How shortsighted. To answer the OP's question, it sounds like you might want to start a photoblog, or if you use flickr you can always add your notes in the photo description. I actually like looking at photos on flickr much more when the photographer explains something about them. |

A blog could be a good idea, but it sounds like it would get tedious if you're shooting a lot and taking lots of notes. The Flickr idea is good too.
I always have a notebook in my bag but I am too lazy or in a hurry to take it out and write stuff. So most of the time I use a little Olympus voice recorder, then if I want to save the files it has a USB plug on it and I can copy them over to the computer. It's also cool to record ambient sounds where you are shooting if they are interesting (for example, a waterfall, trains, birds, etc.). I was thinking about starting to upload them to Posterous. It automatically embeds them in a post in a media player format.

Hi,
This is a hazard, just yesterday I was in a library nas was looking for a small notebook to carry with me and ended purchasing a small Moleskin. But if you carry a notebook/netbook The Journal by david RM is the way to go. I have been using the Journal for the last 4 years as a personnal & work journal. And I am impressed by the power and simplicity of this application. Also to be noted the support from David is way above the standards.
