Smile Hello, I'm new!

I just wanted to pop by and say hello to everyone!

Having brought a DSLR Nikon 3000 camera, I wanted to know more on using it, this website is definitly the most helpful one I have come across. I have learnt an awful lot already but know there is a lot more to be learnt!

I was wondering what everyone's top tips are for someone just starting out in photography...

i started 9 months ago on a DSLR after messing with a P&S for a few years...
my advice, take lots of photos... in 9 months i did 80 photo shoots some worked, some didn't... i tried to do a star trail the other night but that didn't work out... but i now know what issues i need to get past to get one..

Hi welcome to DPS! You'll learn loads here. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions and my favourite top tip to anything is "You have to be really bad at first before you become good". Like the previousl person said take loads of photos and practice, practice and practice some more!

Hi and welcome, Cheryl Anne! The previous posters gave you some great advice. Here's my two cents: read your camera's manual, and read this: Digital Photography Tips and Tutorials - a great place to learn about the basics.

Don't get frustrated if you're not getting the shots you want right away. It takes so much practice and it's a neverending journey of learning. Looking forward to seeing you post some of your photos!

Hello Cheryl anne,
"Welcome" to a great site and fantastic community, I hope you enjoy your time here. I am sure there are many folks here would will tell you everything you might want to know but remember "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" so what some might like others might not, so remember it's all about what you like in your images and how you want them to be perceived by others is all that matter.
All I would say is get to know your camera inside and out, play around with all the settings and experiment with different types of setting and image concepts. I really look forward to seeing some of your images on here soon. Have fun and remember to just get stuck in.
David

Just to echo what's already been said, These are great folks here at DPS and a superb source of knowledge. You will find all different types of styles and photography. The best part is you can experiment on your own and try different things without worry. If you don't like what you've done you can always hit the delete button. Welcome to DPS.

Welcome!

Take lots of pictures, and shoot what you want to shoot and what you like (with a camera, I mean).

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your messages and advice! You all seem like lovely people

I will post some of my photos on later if I can (although don't have any high expectations!), I would be grateful to know what you all think of them!
